Shara Community Gardens is a green, communal gardening space for residents of North Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach, Billinudgel, New Brighton and Ocean Shores.
How Does Your Garden Grow?
With sunshine, rain and a committee of 5 volunteers who ensure that the bills are paid!
The committee meets on a regular basis to plan garden activities and events, and to manage site logistics such as mowing and maintenance. We lease the site from Byron Shire Council. Additional costs include insurance, equipment and materials for the garden.
You don’t have to be part of the committee to be involved! All members of Shara Community Gardens have access to the food grown as part of their membership. They can participate in gardening if they wish. Some members choose to support the gardens financially but not be actively involved in the gardening, maintenance or event planning.
Love the space? Here are 5 ways you can support the Gardens –
- Make a donation. You can do this online or donate cash via the white pole to the right of the exchange table.
- Only take from the garden beds if you are a member.
- If you take food from the exchange table, either make a donation or exchange it for something you’ve grown in your garden.
- Offer your skills. If you’re a green thumb, musician, local business owner, event planner or have something else to offer the gardens – we’d love to hear from you! Contact us.
Thanks for your support!

Our Music in the Gardens event brought neighbours, families and friends together for an afternoon of music, fun and a scavenger hunt for kids of all ages!
